Upper gi endoscopy is an investigation done as an outpatient procedure.
There are many patients who complain of gastric symptoms which are relieved after taking some over-the-counter medicines but usually get recurrence soon after stopping medicines. These patients usually will be harboring H Pylori infection and may be the cause of the above symptoms. In such cases, upper gi endoscopy and biopsy for H pylori are warranted.
In a few patients with pain abdomen and a history of weight loss where cancer in the stomach is suspected, upper gi endoscopy and biopsy from growth are necessary.
It is a painless procedure, a safe procedure, and takes roughly 3 to 5min. Patients can walk back home immediately after the procedure.
