Hiatal Hernia treatment in BTM Layout
What is Hiatal hernia?
When the contents of the abdominal cavity protrude beyond the diaphragm’s esophageal hiatus, this is known as a hiatal hernia. Hiatal hernia is caused by the following factors:
- Developmental abnormalities result in an enlarged esophageal hiatus.
The increased thoracic-abdominal pressure gradient
Aging causes a loss of elastic fiber in the phrenoesophageal membrane.

What are the Different types of Hiatal hernias?
- The first form is a sliding hernia, which occurs when the gastroesophageal junction is pushed into the thoracic cavity. This is one of the most prevalent forms of hiatal hernias, accounting for approximately 95% of all occurrences.
The paraesophageal hernia is the second form, in which the gastroesophageal junction remains in place but the gastric fundus herniates through the diaphragmatic hiatus.
Both the gastroesophageal junction and the stomach herniate above the diaphragm in the third kind.
The fourth form of hernia occurs when additional organs, such as the colon, protrude above the diaphragm in addition to the stomach.
What are the symptoms of hiatal hernia?
- Heartburn
- Difficulty in swallowing food
- Shortness of breath
- Chest and abdominal pain
- Backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus or acid reflux
- Vomiting of blood or passing of black stools, which may indicate gastrointestinal bleeding
- Feeling full as soon as you finish eating
How is the surgery Carried out?
The process for repairing a hiatal hernia laparoscopically is identical to other laparoscopic surgeries. The surgeon makes incisions through which a laparoscope (a laparoscope is a small instrument with a narrow tube that has a light source and camera at the end of the tube) is inserted and the surgeon is able to locate the hernia using the Laparoscope’s video camera. Surgical instruments are then inserted through the other incisions and the hernia is corrected.
In addition, a procedure known as Nissen fundoplication is performed to minimise acid reflux. A 360 degree Trans abdominal fundoplication is used in the Nissen fundoplication treatment.
