The components of the body involved in digesting are operated on during gastrointestinal surgery. The stomach, oesophagus, small and large intestines, and rectum may all be affected. It can be used to remove malignant growths, damaged sections, or blockages from the bodily parts described above.

The damaged/affected part is then removed using surgical equipment through the other incisions, and the incisions are then sealed using surgical glue or staples.
