How is the procedure carried out and how should one prepare for it?
The operation takes around 30 to 60 minutes to complete and is done under anesthetic. Little incisions are created in the upper abdominal area, and the surgeon inserts a Laparoscope (a small tube with a camera at the end of it) to see the stomach. Other surgical equipments is entered via the incisions, and an adjustable band is placed around the upper stomach pouch.
If the patient is on any additional drugs, such as blood thinners or diabetic medications, the doctor will advise them to stop using them before surgery. If the patient smokes or consumes tobacco in any other form, it is recommended that he or she quits since tobacco intake will slow down the recovery process after surgery.
how long does it take and what are the benefits?
- Since the incisions made during the procedure are very small the recovery time is faster.
- the patient might be discharged the very same day if all his vitals are normal
- Studies have shown that the subjects lose up to 40%-50% of excess weight post-surgery.
- The procedure is reversible and hence does not cause any disturbance in normal anatomy.
- The pain of surgical wounds post-surgery is minimal when compared with an open procedure and the recovery is also quick.
- Within 2 to 3 weeks the patient can return to normal activities.
- The doctor may ask the patient to get blood work and various exams to be done to monitor their health during the first few weeks of the recovery process.
- As far as eating goes initially the patient has to follow special diet starting with a diet plan that changes from liquid food to pureed dishes. After this, the patient can start eating softer food and then move on to eating normal food as the tolerance increases.
- During the recovery process, the doctors will prescribe multivitamins and multi-mineral tablets to bridge the nutrient gap and aid recovery. The prescribed vitamins and minerals may include iron, calcium, and vitamin B12.
